Projects In Progress:
- Messaging in the Media – An analysis of gender and messaging in mass media, focusing on the content and marketing of mainstream magazines including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Maxim, GQ, Elle and Marie Claire. Features content subject comparisons, and an interpretation of what these messages are conveying to society. Estimated completion date: April 2007.
- In Defense of Cosmo – A discussion of the merits of Cosmopolitan, as compared to the wave of other “Women's Interest” magazines that have tried to adapt the Cosmo model. Estimated completion date: March 2007.
- The Hip-Hop Project 2007 – A scholarly project which focuses on analyzing the hip-hop influence within the global consciousness. Includes a special section on hip-hop in advertising. Estimated completion date: November 2007.
Future Projects:
- Race and Advertising – The increased use of race and racial differences as fodder for ad campaigns. Examines historic references to race and racist advertising, and reviews modern examples, including the Volkswagon Jetta commericals, the Sony PSP ads, and the Barcardi and Cola ads.
- The Search for Josei – An article exploring the manga boom, and its attempts to expand their offerings as their demographic ages. Article premise: As more and more teen manga fans find themselves thrust into the adult world, we realize that manga isn't necessarily growing up with us.
- Hip-Hop Culture in Manga – As hip-hop culture has grown to be a global force, the culture has started to make its way into manga. With both @Large, Soul to Seoul and Tokyo Tribes representing a more urban face to manga, it is interesting to see how hip-hop culture translates into the Japanese market and aesthetic.
